The Boys Basketball team is only eight games into the season and has already made countless memorable plays. The team is led by Head Coach Jerry Kline in addition to Assistant Varsity Coaches Tony Yazbeck, Joe Hutchins and Eric Bronaugh. The team is fueled through its strong leadership and passion from success in recent years.
Three of the team’s signature wins this season have happened within the last few weeks. The team defeated bitter rival St. Thomas Academy on the road 67-52 on December 20th. It was the 19th consecutive victory over the Cadets and CDH also retained possession of the Archbishop John Ireland Golden Basketball (a travel trophy between the teams). The win was huge for the team and Colin Hilger ’23 said “Beating St. Thomas Academy was definitely my favorite moment so far this season.” Hilger enjoyed the environment of the game, saying “it is always a really highly anticipated game and playing in front of a huge student section was really fun for all of us.”
Their last game was against Eastview who was ranked #4 in the state at East Ridge High School. The game was a thrilling overtime finish. Adam Tauer ’23 sealed the impressive upset win with a slam dunk off a steal before stealing the ball again in the last possession as the clock ran out. The team features both star returning players and new additions to the team this year. Tauer is impressed with how the team is improving, saying “the thing that has stood out most to me is how our team is coming together, it’s been a lot of fun with this group.”
In addition to those two signature wins, the Raiders also upset Robbinsdale Armstrong who ranked #7 in state 64-57 on December 17th at Osseo High School.
The team is building momentum as of late, winning four of their last five games. The team currently stands at a 5-3 record. The team’s regular season will run through March, hoping to win their fourth Section Championship in a row and looking to repeat a State appearance. The team is entering a very important stretch, playing nine straight Suburban East Conference games before matching up against Minnetonka on the road in February. The team will face off against Woodbury at 7 pm on the road on Tuesday.
