JV Conference Swimmers Swim Fast!

By Mike Steineman ' 92 Head Coach 02/18/2024, 10:15am CST

Raider Swimmers All Drop Time

Cottage Grove, MN - The CDH Boys' Swimming and Diving Team began their postseason on Saturday, February 17 at the Suburban East (SEC) JV Conference Meet.  Led by Senior Nate Leber '24, the team had an outstanding day at the pool!

Joining Leber was Sophomore Carl Steinhoff '26 and Ninth Graders Graham Rasmussen '27 and Brody Tesch '27.  The four started their day with the 200 Medley Relay.  Leber led off swimming backstroke, followed by Rasmussen on breaststroke, Steinhoff swimming butterfly, and Tesch anchoring the relay while swimming freestyle.  Their time of 2:36.93 was a 4.29 second drop from their seed time of 2:41.22 and was good enough for 9th place.

The next event for CDH was the 50 Freestyle.  All four of the guys swam this event.  Each earned a lifetime best with Steinhoff leading the way in a time of 28.11.  This was a 1.92 second drop for Carl and earned him an 18th place finish.

After the Diving event, Steinhoff and Tesch swam the 100 Freestyle as their second, and final, individual event.  Both swam lifetime best swims!  Steinhoff again was the highest place finisher for the Raiders with a time of 1:04.67 finishing in 17th place.  Tesch was right behind him though with a time of 1:05.91 and finished in 19th place.

Next, the four joined forces again in their second, and final, relay of the day.  This time, they swam the 200 Freestyle Relay and finished in a time of 2:15.13 earning 14th place while dropping 1.93 seconds.  Steinhoff anchored this relay and had the fastest split at 28.70.

Finally, Leber and Rasmussen swam their last event of the day, the 100 Backstroke.  Rasmussen led the way with the team's highest place finish.  His time of 1:19.50 was a 7.39 second drop and earned him 7th place!

Overall, the team was a perfect ten for ten!  Every swim was a seasonal and lifetime best!  When the last race was complete, the team finished in 9th place overall with a total of 73 points.  All with just four swimmers!

Up next for the Raiders is the MSHSL 6AA Section Meet.  The meet is Thursday-Saturday, February 22-24, 2024.  The meet will be at the Art Downey Aquatic Center at South View Middle School.  Please see our website for more information.

2023 CDH Boys Swimming Section Team

Boys Swimmers Shine at Sections

By Mike Steineman ' 92 Head Coach 03/03/2023, 8:45am CST

CDH Wins Eighteenth Academic Section Award

Edina, MN - The Boy's Swimming & Diving Team had a great Section Meet on Saturday, February 25, 2023.  Originally scheduled as Prelims and Finals, the Prelims on Thursday, February 23, 2023 were canceled due to the snow storm.  After many emails, phone calls, text messages, and zoom meetings, it was decided that the meet would be Timed Finals on Saturday.  The team is small this year with no seniors.  We have eleven guys total and only nine of them competed at Sections. They have worked hard and refused to let their size or the schedule changes affect how they were going to swim!

At the meet, the Raiders swam very well!  They finished in sixth place behind the Champion Edina Hornets and runner-up St. Louis Park Orioles.  CDH had 21 total swims and 95% of those swims were either lifetime or season bests!  This is the best that the Raiders have ever done as a team at a championship meet!

Individually, Junior Captain Matt Baumberger '24 finished in second place in the 200 Individual Medley (IM) with a time of 1:56.64.  His time beat the State Qualifying Time of 1:57.59.  In addition, in the 100 Butterfly, Matt won the event in a time of 51.53 again beating the State Qualifying Time of 52.40.  Swimmers that make the State qualifying time or finish first or second at Section Finals go to State.  Matt was determined to make it to State and he made sure he did so by achieving two qualifying times!  Please see the results section of our webpage for the entire set of results from the meet.

The Raiders made some additional waves outside of the water too.  For the 18th year in a row, our team earned an Academic Section Award!  We were named a Silver Team for earning a GPA of 3.72.  Swimming and Diving teams with GPAs of 3.50-3.74 earn Silver Status.  It is our 11th Silver Academic Award since the award program began during the 2004-2005 school year.  The other seven awards we have earned were Gold Status for having a GPA of 3.75 or higher!

Finally, special congrats to Assistant Coach Hannah Zobitz (CDH Class of 2013) as she won Assistant Coach of the Year as voted by the Coaches in our Section!

Matt now advances to the Class AA State Swimming and Diving Championships held this weekend (March 3-4, 2023) at the U of MN Aquatic Center.  This is the ninth year in a row that we have sent someone to State and the twenty-sixth time in the last twenty-seven years that CDH has competed at State!

Friday, March 3rd is the swimming preliminaries and they will start at 6 PM.  Saturday, March 4th is swimming and diving finals and they will begin at 6 pm as well.  Going into the meet, Matt is seeded 9th in the 200 IM and 11th in the 100 Fly.  The top 16 swimmers in Prelims will advance to finals on Saturday.
