The Girls Varsity tennis team currently holds a record of 9-8, with most matches either (4-3) or (5-2) leading one way or another, but there has been more to their season than just the numbers. As the team begins to prepare for sections, the spirit of connection, as well as personal and team growth, have been key parts of the girls’ experience. This year, the team not only showed their impressive skills on the court but also made lasting friendships, making their journey more memorable than the matches themselves.

Under the guidance and leadership of head coach Tim Spika, the team has seen significant improvements throughout the season in both individual performance and team dynamics. Coach Spika emphasizes the importance of creating a supportive environment within the program. Lucy Brondum ’27 confirmed that this is happening, stating, “I’ve never once felt judged or uncomfortable around the girls and they’re always there for me if I need them.”

When asked about his favorite tournament, Coach Spika said it was the CDH/Highland Park tournament earlier in the year. “Those victories, even early in the season, were meaningful. They also showed us how competitive we could be this year, especially compared to last season.”

When asked about highlights from the season, Coach Spika and many players answered with the team day-trip to La Crosse, WI, “there were so many cool moments in the trip that entire day,” said Spika. Off the court, the players have enjoyed many bonding activities that deepen their connections. Riley Russell ’27 recalled a fun post-match event after a competitive face-off against Park Center, saying, “My favorite memory from this tennis season was playing volleyball with Park in the aux gym after our match.” These memories not only provide a break from the competitive atmosphere, but also help team success through memories and friendships.

As the regular season winds down and sections inch closer, the players are practicing or playing on a daily basis. Coach Spika and his players have high hopes for a successful run in sections, believing in their hard work and strategic play. As each player brings their different strengths to the court, the team holds much faith in their ability to rise to the challenge.

While some matches may fade from memory, the bonds and memories created throughout the season are what really stand out. Maggie Drahn ’27 stated this message perfectly: “The matches I might not remember, but the memories I have made with this team will last forever.” Mallorie Taft ’26 also highlighted this, saying, “My favorite thing about the team is the relationship and connection all the players form.” This focus on teamwork and relationships just speaks to the amazing values of the program.
