Alpine Ski Hits the Slopes

Hot dogs sizzling on the grill, fires crackling, and cowbells ringing. No, you’re not camping out in a Swiss pasture, but at a CDH alpine ski race! After a season afflicted by COVID protocols and a no-spectator policy, the spirit is back this year in full force. With tents, tailgating, and much more, the Raider Alpine community is stronger than ever.

Being a smaller team, everyone makes Varsity and has the opportunity to compete at a high level. With many promising new ninth graders joining the boys team, we’re getting more times on the chart, and averaging more overall team points than before. As for the girl’s team, therefore athletes make up for the small team size with fast times on the race course.

“There is always so much amazing progression by our athletes in our short season. Not all successes are measured by the timing clock,” said coach Wendy Loudas. “The team has especially benefited from dry land and pre-season training and the difference on the hill is noticeable.”

With Sections around the corner and a chance to make it to State, the energy is palpable, and nerves are high.

“Skiing is an escape where I can focus on something I like to do,” said Jane Zirnhelt ’22

As the season comes to a close, CDH Alpine is looking for new talent, and anyone interested in joining the team next year. No previous experience is necessary, and the social aspect of the team is worth it. If you’re interested in joining the team, contact  Coach Carrie Freitag at cfreitag@c-dh.org.
