Opportunity for athletes of all abilities and experience this Fall

By Chris Babcock, 07/23/21, 4:15PM CDT

Wondering what activity to get involved in this Fall? New to CDH? Or just looking to change things up? Cross Country might be the place for you.

My name is Chris Babcock. I have been the head cross country and track and field coach at Cretin-Derham Hall since 1998. You can learn more about me here (

The opportunity for your student is with cross country. I cannot stress enough the accessibility of this program. Throughout my years at the head coach we have seen athletes achieve high levels of success at the state level as well as at the "every person" level. Athletes have finished in the top 20 at the state meet. But what is more important is that every athlete has had the opportunity to succeed. It is my belief that the athletes on my teams, from the very fastest to the very slowest, need to set goals and define for themselves what success will be.

On the same teams where I have had All-State finishers I also had athletes who started out not able to run a mile without stopping. However, they were able to run a full 5K race by the end of the season.

We are having an informational meeting at 6:30 on Monday, July 26, 2021 at CDH in room FH 114. You can learn more about the team here (

The season runs from August 16 to November 6. We practice 5 days a week with a meet. Every athlete on the team gets to race in a meet every week.

If you have older students who have lost interest in other sports they are welcome to join. Many of our members join in 10th, and 11th grade. We have even had some 12th graders join too.

The one thing that students tell me at the end of their high school career is that they wished they joined earlier. If you have a 9th grader that is looking to get in shape for the winter season, have them come out for cross country.

Thank you for your time. You can email ( with any questions.
