Our faculty are dedicated to our students! Many of them don't only teach - they also coach or advise clubs as well.

To celebrate our coaches who also teach or are staff at CDH, we're sharing a Q&A with each of them over the next few months! Today, meet Mike Brewer, Football Coach and Guidance Counselor.

Did you play the sport you coach as a student-athlete?
Yes.

What made you decide to coach?
I enjoy getting to know the student-athletes outside of the school day. I believe in using sports as a platform to teach lessons about life and what it takes to set goals, respond to adversity and find success.

How long have you been coaching here at CDH?
24 years.

What do you love about coaching?
I love seeing student-athletes develop and grow.

How does your experience as a coach improve your work?
I cannot imagine my work as a counselor without my involvement athletically.  I use my experience as a coach to reach and support all students, even those that are not involved with athletics.

How does your experience as a counselor improve your coaching?
I try to develop rapport and relationships with all of my students. Once a student believes you know them and care about them, they trust you to coach them.

Do you have any favorite memories from your time coaching? Too many to pick one but I will say I will never forget Casey O'Brien '17's 9th-grade year. Our 9th-grade team was witness to the start of his battle when he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma during the season. We can now look back on all he has endured and how he has fought and won.
