Cretin-Derham Hall has a long standing history of strong athletics and this current lacrosse season is no exception. We have seen our team evolve into a force to be reckoned as we prepare for the postseason.

Although our current record is 4-2, I believe that our team has displayed the work of an undefeated team. In our last home game, we suffered a loss in a nail biter finish against Stillwater. However, the score of 4-5 proved that we can compete against high caliber opponents.

Our team is in the process of a transformation with the help of dedicated coaches, tenacious players and a passion for greatness. Our head coach, Matt Hourigan, and assistant coaches, Ryan Beeson and Matt Scanlon strive to ensure no team member’s skills are undervalued. They consistently push us to become better players but do so in a collaborative way with positive reinforcement. An example of this are our daily shoutouts at the end of every practice. Players step forward and shout out another player on something they did well during that particular practice. This shows the cooperative energy that is present at every practice and encouraged by our coaches. These values aid us both on and off the field and will guide us past our high school lives.

What makes any team successful is not only coaches’ leadership but the enthusiasm players bring to the table. Captains Chuck Altier ’21, Will Kaatz ’21, and Zach Steigauf ’21 create an environment where players want to improve not only for themselves but for the sake of the team. The spirit of the captains is spreads to the other seniors and all the way to the freshmen on the team. You can often see Max Guyott ’21 or Brady Savard ’23 getting fired up when Luke McCarthy ‘22 swerves defensemen on his way to score.

Making plays is important but at the end of the day, I believe our team’s supportiveness puts us a notch above other teams. Our foundation for a successful season is already set in place and will continue to prosper.

As we head into sections, I believe the path to state is just ahead of us. If we continue upholding our values and progress our own talents in a way that’s beneficial to the betterment of the entire team, we will walk away with a season that every player will be proud of.
