The Cretin-Derham Hall hockey program has a strong legacy. However, The girls program has had to fight through some recent adversity. Not only have the girls adjusted to playing with masks on during COVID-19, they have also adjusted to a new coaching staff. The girls are coming off of three seasons just above or below 500. 

The Girls Hockey team is building off a strong legacy with a season full of changes. Not only have we had to adjust to wearing masks while playing, we’ve also been adjusting to a new coaching staff.

The new Coach, Tony Scheid, has changed the game and the environment. He preaches, “Win the conference, win the section, and win state.” Scheid, coming from the Woodbury Royals, played Division I hockey for The University of Wisconsin. He went on from the Badgers to play junior hockey for the Madison Capitols. Scheid won two state championships with Stillwater in 2007 and 2009. He also coached at the Jr level and had twelve players drafted by the NHL in nine seasons. 

Scheid wants to win and he wants his girls to win. He wants the girls to win not only on the ice, but in their personal lives. Even through COVID-19, the coaches have managed to stay extremely organized and run a disciplined team. 

At first, playing while wearing masks was hard, but we are getting used to it. With the constant encouragement and support from the coaches and players, this new adjustment has not been too bad. Over all, this team is just happy to be able to play. We went from a .500 season last year to winning three of the seven games they played in the gap. The Raiders lost to Holy Family, a top ten team, only 3-2. We also beat single A champions South St. Paul not only once but twice. 

CDH is projected to be a big contender in the conference. Stillwater and Roseville are the two biggest challenges before sections. In the short period of time Coach Scheid has been with the team, he has changed the level we’re playing at. The team is passing better, better positioned, and overall playing way better. 

Scheid preaches positivity and believing in yourself. He believes that the team isn’t just a team but a family. In families, there are rough times and there are confrontations, but this family will rise above that. The team has an underdog look to it, but these underdogs will come out on top. We will work hard and that is what will lead us to victory. With the leadership of Coach Scheid, you will see a victorious program and it will only go up from here.
