John Tauer Class of 1991
University of St. Thomas
John Tauer graduated from Cretin-Derham Hall in 1991, where he was named all-state in both basketball and baseball, captain of both sports, and won state championships in baseball (1990) and basketball (1991). After leaving CDH, Tauer was a standout basketball player at the University of Saint Thomas and was a key member of the 1994 Final Four team. Upon graduating from UST, Tauer earned his Ph.D from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Tauer returned to teach and coach at UST. Tauer was an assistant to Steve Fritz for several years before taking over as head coach in 2012. Tauer has been part of three final four teams as a player, assistant coach and head coach winning two national championships (2011, 2016). Tauer has also has directed his championship summer camps for the last 20 years.
Matt Birk - Class of 1994
Minnesota Vikings/Baltimore Ravens
Matt Birk is a 1994 graduate of Cretin-Derham Hall. Matt was a member of the 1993 State Championship team. Birk was a standout lineman at Harvard University. He was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the sixth round of the 1998 NFL Draft, and later played for the Baltimore Ravens. Birk is a two-time All-Pro, six-time Pro Bowlselection, and one-time Super Bowl champion. Birk currently works for the NFL.
Joe Mauer - Class of 2001
Joe Mauer is a 2001 graduate of Cretin-Derham Hall where he was a three sport all-state player and a finalist of the Mr. Basketball of Minnesota award. Mauer was a member of the 2001 state tournament team and scored 1,270 points in his basketball career. Mauer has committed to play college football at Florida State under coach Bobby Bowden. In the spring of his senior year Joe was selected first overall in the MLB draft by the Minnesota Twins and elected to pursue a baseball career. He is the only catcher in MLB history to win three batting titles, and the only catcher to ever win a batting title in the American League. He also won three consecutive Gold Glove awards (2008–2010), and was the American League MVP in 2009
Sean Sweeney - Class of 2002
Sean Sweeney is a 2002 graduate of Cretin-Derham Hall, where he was an all-state guard. Sean was the staring point guard on the 2001 State Tournament team that place 3rd. Sean also had a standout career at the University of Saint Thomas. After his playing days were complete, Sean pursued a career in coaching. Sean has coached at Anoka Ramsey, Evansville, Academy of Arts and Northern Iowa in the college ranks. Sean then moved to the NBA and coached for the Brooklyn Nets. Sean currently is in his second year with the Detroit Pistons. Sweeney has written a basketball book titled "The 101 Plays of The Playoffs".
Michael Floyd - Class of 2008
Michael Floyd is a 2008 graduate of Cretin-Derham Hall where he was a standout basketball player and All-American football player. Floyd is the 3rd all-time leading scorer at CDH with 1,379 points and was a finalist for the Mr. Basketball of Minnesota award. In addition to football, he also ran track. In football, he recorded 59 receptions for 1,247 yards (21.1 avg.) and 17 TDs as a senior and added 497 rushing yards on 43 carries (11.6 avg.). He also returned 16 punts for 373 yards (23.3 avg.) and four touchdowns, helping to lead his high school team to a 13-1 record and appearance in the state championship game. In order to afford the school, Floyd worked off a scholarship by helping the custodial staff clean the school before the day started. Floyd was named Minnesota Player of the Year twice by theAssociated Press and Gatorade (2007, 2008). He was a USA Today High School All-American in 2007and was picked to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas.
Floyd then played his college ball at the University of Notre Dame under coaches Charlie Weis and Brian Kelly. Floyd was a standout for the Irish earning All-American honors. Floyd was a first round draft pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2012 and has spent time with the New England Patriots, Minnesota Vikings, Washington Redskins and Baltimore Ravens
Seantrel Henderson - Class of 2010
Seantrel Henderson is a 2010 graduate of Cretin-Derham Hall. Henderson was a four year varsity basketball player where he scored over 1,000 points as well as being an All-American left tackle. Henderson played his college football at the University of Miami and was drafted by the Buffalo Bills. Henderson is the starting right tackle for the Houston Texans.
Daniel Oturu - Class of 2018
Los Angeles Clippers
Daniel Oturu is a 2018 graduate of CDH. During Daniel's tenure at CDH he became the all time leader in points (2,004) rebounds (1,352) and blocks (585) while earning all-state honors in 2017 and 18. Daniel was named to the Nike Hoop Summit in 2018 as well as leading CDH to the 2018 State Championship. At the University of Minnesota Daniel warned All-Big Ten honors as well as becoming the first Gopher All-American in 21 years. Dan was drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2020 NBA Draft.
